What are the different types of Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualifications?

The Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualifications are split into two levels.

Level 2:

The Level 2 certificate is aimed at those who are looking to get started as a teaching assistant or learning support assistant.

Level 3:

The Level 3 qualifications are for those who already have significant experience as a school support worker and are now looking to progress into a more specialised role.

Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (STALIS / STLS)

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools equips you with the knowledge and skills required to work in classrooms under the supervision of a teacher. It’s a great starting point for learners looking to secure a role as a teaching assistant or learning support staff.

The course contains a selection of mandatory and optional units. These include:

  • 1. Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people.
  • 2. Maintain and support professional relationships with children and young people.
  • 3. Communication and professional relationship with children, young people and adults
  • 4. Child and young person development
  • 5. Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • 6. Support children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • 7. Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • 8. Supporting learning activities
  • 9. Help improve own and team practice in schools
  • 10. Schools as organisations
  • 11. Prepare and maintain learning environments.

This course has approximately 80 hours of study time. Most learners will complete the qualification in 5-6 months, although it can be completed sooner or later depending on your schedule.

Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (STALIS / STLS)

With the Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, you can become a qualified teaching assistant. You’ll learn about everything from best-practice teaching methods to health and safety in schools.

There are four mandatory units required for this course. These are:

  1. Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  2. School as organisations
  3. Understand child and young person development
  4. Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people

This course has approximately 120 hours of study time. Most learners will complete the qualification in 5-6 months, although it can be completed sooner or later depending on your schedule.

Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (STALIS / STLS)

The Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools can help you on your way to your dream role in a school or educational facility. It will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding to enable you to work in a specialised role, such as an additional needs assistant, pastoral/welfare support assistant, bilingual support assistant or foundation stage assistant.

This course consists of the following units:

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • School as organisations
  • Understand child and young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people
  • Support assessment for learning
  • Support learning activities
  • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Promote children and young people’s health and safety
  • Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people

This course has approximately 320 hours of study time. Most learners will complete the qualification in 5-6 months, although it can be completed sooner or later depending on your schedule.
