The HLTA allows you to move into a higher level teaching assistant role. This role offers a higher salary and increased responsibilities. In addition to all your current responsibilities as a standard teaching assistant, you may also be required to:
- Teach classes on your own
- Cover planned absences
- Manage other learning support staff
How do you become qualified?
The requirements to enrol on this course are as follows:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Have good literacy skills
- Work in a school as a TA for at least 12 hours per week
- Have at least 50 hours of classroom experience
This course offers a combination of online and in-person learning. To complete this course, you’ll be required to be observed by an expert witness in a real school setting.
How long does the course take?
The HLTA has approximately 360 hours of study time and learners have a maximum of 12 months to complete it. Most learners will complete the HLTA in 5-6 months, although you can finish it sooner or later depending on your schedule.
How does the course affect salary?
The Higher Level Teaching Assistant role increases your responsibilities, and therefore increases your salary, too.
Starting salaries for full-time, permanent teaching assistants are typically around £17,364.
By becoming a higher level teaching assistant, your salary will typically increase in the range of £1000-£8000. The upper end of that range is usually reserved for those with additional specialisms or SEN responsibilities.
