What does teaching hairdressing involve?

As a hairdressing teacher/lecturer you will be working with a range of students from 14 years old and above, each of which will have varying learning styles and abilities. As a teacher, it is your responsibility to treat every student with equality and respect.

The main responsibilities of a hairdressing lecturer are to develop the knowledge and skills of your learners to a standard that will enable them to work as a professional. You’ll be teaching a variety of different topics — everything from cutting and shampooing to colouring. In addition to imparting your knowledge, you’ll also be responsible for the following:

  • Administration tasks
  • Writing a scheme of work and a teaching assessment plan
  • Creating lesson plans and resources
  • Marking assignments
  • Attending department meetings

Teachers have a duty of care that you will be expected to adhere to. You’ll be responsible for the welfare, health and safety of your learners, plus, you’ll be required to have one-to-ones with each of your students to support them however they need it.
