Working in further education is hugely rewarding. You’ll be helping adults gain the skills and qualifications they need to flourish in the working world. But to secure a position in further education, you’ll first need to gain particular skills and qualifications yourself. But don’t worry — you can earn the necessary qualifications from the comfort of your own home thanks to online teacher/trainer courses.
In this article, we lay out the route to becoming a teacher/trainer in further education.
Earning qualifications
Level 3 Award in Education and Training
The first step towards becoming a teacher/trainer in further education is to earn the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET).
The Level 3 AET is a foundation-level course designed for learners with no prior experience of training or teaching. It will provide a beginner’s look into teaching and what it involves.
The course is split into three mandatory units:
UNIT NO: 1 — Understanding the Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training
This introductory unit helps you to understand the introduction of teaching including health and safety, equal opportunities and the other professionals you may have to work with.
UNIT NO: 2 — Understanding and using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in education and training.
This unit helps you to understand how people learn, the ways in which people communicate and how to use a range of different teaching methods and resources to help you meet your learners’ individual needs.
UNIT NO: 3 — Understanding the principles and practices of assessment.
This unit identifies what assessment is and how to deliver excellent assessment practice. The unit is ideal for anybody with an interest in assessing workplace achievement or those delivering regulated qualifications and awards.
The Level 3 AET does not require any in-person teaching or training. The entire course can be completed from the comfort of your own home. With CTC Training, you can earn your Level 3 AET from anywhere in the world on a schedule that suits you.
Further qualifications
You might also wish to enhance your knowledge and skills by earning advanced teaching and training qualifications. The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) and the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) are the next two steps up on the qualification ladder. These qualifications equip you with more advanced teaching skills and classroom teaching experience.
Once you have earned The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, you can then apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) status. It should be noted that it is not mandatory to complete either the Level 3 or Level 4 courses to enrol on the Level 5 course, but you will be required to commit to 100 hours of teaching practice to complete the course.
Getting hired
So you’ve earned your qualifications — great! Your next task is to secure yourself a role.
